  • Our Process: The Art of Saponification

At The Soap Quarry, every bar of soap begins with a time-honored, hands-on process called saponification—the natural chemical reaction that transforms oils into soap.

We carefully blend high-quality, plant-based oils and butters—like olive oil, coconut oil, and castor oil —with a lye solution (sodium hydroxide and water). When combined, the lye breaks down the fats in the oils and bonds with their fatty acids, creating two things: soap and glycerin. Glycerin is a natural humectant, which means it helps retain moisture—making our bars especially gentle and nourishing for your skin.

Once poured into molds, the soap begins to harden. After 24 to 48 hours, we hand-cut each bar and place it on curing racks, where it rests for 4 to 6 weeks. This curing period allows the saponification process to fully complete, the moisture to evaporate, and the bar to become harder, longer-lasting, and milder.

This slow, intentional method ensures each bar delivers a rich lather, gentle cleanse, and luxurious feel—crafted the way soap was meant to be.
